Alex Blumberg
Gimlet Media’s co-founder and CEO, along with Matt Lieber, is Alex Blumberg. Prior to joining Gimlet, he worked as a radio journalist for This American Life and co-founded the NPR/This American Life co-production Planet Money with Adam Davidson.
After a lengthy career in public radio, Blumberg founded Gimlet, a for-profit podcast network that specializes in storytelling and narrative journalism. The Verge, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times have all published episodes from Gimlet. Gimlet presently produces three podcasts: Mystery Show, in which host Starlee Kine solves common riddles, Reply All, a show about the internet, and StartUp, a true story about what it’s like to start a business. There are a ton of new series in production.
Every significant broadcast journalism award, including the Polk, duPont-Columbia, and Peabody, has been given to Blumberg’s work. The Giant Pool of Money, Blumberg’s critically acclaimed audio documentary about the housing crisis that he co-produced and covered with Adam Davidson, was recognized by the Arthur L. Carter School of Journalism at New York University as one of the top 10 journalism works of the previous ten years.
Planet Money provides economic news in a novel, approachable, lighthearted, yet direct manner through podcasts, radio pieces, documentaries, and blog entries. The interactive project Planet Money Makes a T-Shirt, which garnered an Emmy and nearly all significant online awards, was executive produced by Blumberg.
In addition, Blumberg worked as executive producer on the Showtime network’s adaptation of This American Life. Nearly all of the main market television critics gave the show excellent reviews. Four Emmys were won by it, one of which was for best non-fiction television series.
Apart from his work on the economics, Blumberg has produced radio documentaries on subjects like young Steve Forbes followers, life on a US aircraft carrier, and prisoners putting on a Hamlet play. His degree from Oberlin College is in hand. He resides in Brooklyn, NY, with his spouse and their two kids.
