With studies under his belt, including Paul Rand, Bradbury Thompson, and Herbert Matter, Richard Mehl will impart to you a basic understanding of color theory principles and show you how to apply them in Color for Designers: Exploration, Theory, & Application. He will share insights gained from 12 years of teaching and writing about color in design.
Richard presents a simple approach to the serious study of color theory for designers. You’ll be exposed to a relevant sequence of ideas and techniques by exploring a range of analog and digital projects.

Richard Mehl:
Richard Mehl has spent more than a decade teaching typography, color theory, and two-dimensional design at the School of Visual Arts. His pupils have gone on to work for prominent design firms like Bloomberg, New York Magazine, Pentagram, The Guardian, The New York Times, and Sagmeister & Walsh as accomplished, award-winning designers and creative directors.
At Yale School of Art, where he studied under legendary graphic designers Paul Rand, Bradbury Thompson, and Herbert Matter, as well as design instructors Alvin Eisenman and Inge Druckrey, type designer Matthew Carter, and information design specialist Edward Tufte, Mehl obtained an MFA in graphic design. Playing with Color: 50 Graphic Experiments for Investigating Color Design Principles (©2013 Rockport Publishers) is a book he wrote. Mehl maintains a graphic design business out of Chelsea, New York, along with his family, which includes his dog Sheldon and wife Alicia.
